Interview: Tokio Hotel can’t wait to sing at MTV World Stage 2010
There’s no doubt about it: Tokio Hotel is one of the biggest bands this year and they have their fans to thank them for. That’s why the boys kept gushing about you in this exclusive interview.
You guys put on a terrific show here in Malaysia back in May 2010. What do you miss most about Malaysia?
Bill: When we first came, we were so surprised because everyone was so friendly and we had a warm welcome, so we definitely missed the people and the weather, of course! But on stage, it gets a little too hot and we’re not used to it; we were on a European tour and it was cold everywhere. But it was great and we look forward to the show!
What can fans expect from your performance at the MTV World Stage?
B: This time it’s going to be bigger: production-wise and special-effects like electric shower. It’s going to be really, really cool. We did think about playing naked [laughs]. I wanted to bring my costumes with me from the European tour but I think it will be too hot. Maybe something more casual this time.
It’s been two months since we last saw you in May. What have you guys been up to?
B: We were in the studio and we did some promotional tour in Europe. We just launched our new DVD ‘Humanoid City Live’ and we recorded this at Milano. It’s a fantastic live DVD and we had a lot of fun doing this. We also recorded a live album and a new video ‘Darkside of The Sun’.
You are set to perform at MTV World Stage with the likes of Katy Perry and Wonder Girls. Who are you most excited to meet?
B: I’m most excited to meet the fans and the crowd. I’ve never heard about the Wondergirls; they’re a completely new band to us. But, the fans are incredible and we’re looking forward to our own show and concert.
Tom: For all of us, we’re looking forward to our performance and I’m a big fan of Tokio Hotel, so I can’t wait to see them live! And they have such a beautiful guitar player! [laughs]
Back in 2008, Katy Perry dedicated her controversial song ‘Ur So Gay’ to you for beating her to the ‘Best New Artiste’ Award. Are you flattered?
B: I seriously feel sorry for her that we won! Well, the best band wins [laughs]. And everyone knows we have the best fans in the world!
Tell us more about your fans.
B: They are loyal and they’re always there for us. It feels like a whole family on the road; we have some fans who are always at our shows in Europe. We have Tokio Hotel TV and the Internet that we can always check and keep in touch with them.
We understand that Bill and Tom are turning 21 this year. Would you like any presents from your fans?
B: You know, I like diamonds and Ferrari! I like it when fans write us songs and post video messages to us. George will be buying us a Ferrari and a diamond ring!
T: Oh, we have a rule in the band: no presents for nobody as it would be too expensive! We’ve known each other for ten years and to buy amazing presents for four great people, we thought, we don’t want that stress! We just have a great time together. And we party! Let’s say George had a party when he’s on tour and that was really sweet. Our bus driver arranged for a party in the tour bus! So I gave him a real, warm hug.
George: That’s what we wish for every year.
We’ll give you a hug for the success of ‘Humanoid’ as well.
B: We are so proud of this record because it’s always hard to record the third album as a band. But it was exactly how we wanted; we tried new stuff in the studio and it worked live on stage. Everything’s working great, especially the European tour, Malaysia and Asia, and now we’re better than ever.
What’s next for Tokio Hotel after MTV World Stage 2010?
B: Erm, we are going on a short trip to South America, and after that we go back to Europe to do more promo tours, followed by the studio to write new songs. Hopefully we get a vacation and some time off. It was a long year for us!
Where would you like to go for a vacation?
B: We like small islands. We always go to the Maldives, which is so beautiful. We’ve been there, I don’t know [pauses] it’s the most beautiful place in the world. I really like to go somewhere quiet where there is the beach, ocean and nothing else.
Since your band’s name is Tokio Hotel, do you have any weird hotel experiences?
B: Yes, we’ve been to many hotels on our travels and we have a few favourites like the one in Singapore, actually. And we had some bad experience like this hotel in South Africa where we had our video shoot, it was called a hotel but it wasn’t a hotel, really. It was like a small bungalow to fit everyone and there was camping involved! It was so f**king cold in the room and there was no heater! Nothing to eat, no Internet and water too! That was really an experience for us.
What do you guys listen to on your iPod?
B: It’s a mixture of Aerosmith to pop stuff; I don’t have this one band locked down but most of the time, I listen to this band called Tokio Hotel.
George: I really like the new record by 30 Seconds to Mars. I listen to it all the time.
Gustav: I listen to Devilish.

Il n’y a aucun doute: Tokio Hotel est l’un des plus grands groupes cette année et ils en remercient leurs fans. C’est pourquoi les garçons ne cessent de parler de vous dans cette entrevue exclusive.
Vous avez fait un concert formidable ici, en Malaisie, en Mai 2010. Qu’est-ce qui vous manque le plus de la Malaisie ?
Bill: Lorsque nous sommes venus pour la première fois, nous étions tellement surpris, parce que tout le monde était tellement amical et nous avons eu un accueil chaleureux, donc les gens et la température nous manquent définitivement! Sur scène, ça devient un peu trop chaud et nous n’en sommes pas habitués, nous étions en tournée européenne et il faisait froid partout. Mais c’était bien et nous avons hâte au concert!
À quoi les fans devront-ils s’attendre pour votre performance au MTV World Stage?
B: Cette fois, ce sera plus gros: une plus grosse production et des effets spéciaux comme une averse électrique. Ce sera vraiment, vraiment cool. Nous avons pensé à jouer nus [rires]. Je voulais apporter avec moi, mes costumes pour la tournée européenne, mais je crois que ce sera trop chaud. Sûrement quelque chose de plus habituel, cette fois.
Ça fait deux mois depuis la dernière fois, en Mai. Qu’avez-vous fait depuis?
B: Nous étions en studio et nous avons fait un peu de promotion en Europe. Nous venons tout juste de lancer notre nouveau DVD «Humanoid City Live» et nous l’avons enregistré à Milan. C’est un DVD en direct fantastique et nous avons pris beaucoup de plaisir à le faire. Nous avons aussi enregistré un album live et une nouvelle vidéo, «Darkside of The Sun».
Vous allez performer au MTV World Stage avec des personnalités telles que Katy Perry et Wonder Girls. Qui êtes-vous le plus excités de rencontrer ?
B: Je suis plus excité de rencontrer les fans et le public. Je n’ai jamais entendu parler des Wonder Girls: c’est totalement un nouveau groupe pour nous. Mais les fans sont incroyables et nous avons très hâte à notre propre concert et spectacle.
Tom: Quant à nous tous, nous avons très hâte à notre performance et je suis un grand fan de Tokio Hotel, alors je ne peux plus attendre de les voir en direct! Et ils ont un guitariste tellement beau! [rires]
En 2008, Katy Perry t’a dédié sa chanson controversée «Ur So Gay» pour l’avoir surpassée en remportant le prix «Best New Artist» contre elle. Es-tu flatté?
B: Je me sens sérieusement mal pour elle que nous avons gagné! Éh bien, le meilleur groupe gagne [rires]. Et tout le monde sait que nous avons les meilleurs fans au monde!
Dites-nous en plus sur vos fans.
B: Ils sont loyaux et sont toujours là pour nous. C’est comme une grosse famille sur la route; nous avons des fans qui sont toujours à nos concerts en Europe. Nous avons Tokio Hotel TV et une connection Internet où nous pouvons toujours avec un certain contact avec eux.
Nous comprenons que Bill et Tom touchent leurs 21 ans cette année. Aimeriez-vous avoir des cadeaux de vos fans ?
B: Vous savez, j’aime les diamants et Ferrari! J’aime quand les fans nous écrivent des chansons et nous postent des messages vidéo. Georg nous achètera la Ferrari et la bague en diamant!
T: Oh, nous avons une règle dans le groupe: pas de cadeaux pour personne, sinon c’est trop cher! Nous nous connaissons depuis dix ans et nous avons pensé, acheter un cadeau impressionnant pour quatre personnes biens, nous ne voulons pas ce stress! Nous avons simplement de bons moments ensemble. Et nous fêtons! Disons que Georg a eu une fête quand il était en tournée et c’était vraiment fou. Notre chauffeur avait organisé une fête dans l’autobus de tournée! Donc, nous lui avons donné un gros et chaleureux câlin.
George: C’est ce que je souhaite à chaque année.
Nous te donnerons un câlin pour le succès d’«Humanoid», aussi.
B: Nous sommes tellement fiers de cet album parce que c’est toujours difficile d’enregister un troisième album en terme de groupe. Mais c’est exactement ce que nous voulions; nous avons essayé quelque chose de nouveau au studio et ça a marché en direct sur scène. Tout fonctionne parfaitement, spécialement la tournée européenne, Malaisie et Asie, et tout va pour le mieux.
Que va-t-il suivre pour les Tokio Hotel après le MTV Wolrd Stage 2010 ?
B: Erm, nous partons pour un court voyage en Amérique du Sud, et après nous retournons en Europe pour faire plus de promotion, suivie par les studios pour écrire de nouvelles chansons. Nous espérons avoir des vacances et quelque temps libre. C’était une longue année pour nous!
Où aimeriez-vous aller en vacance?
B: Nous aimons les petites îles. Nous allons toujours aux Maldives, qui sont merveilleuses. Nous sommes déjà allés là, je ne sais pas [pause] c’est la plus belle place au monde. J’aime vraiment aller à quelque part de silencieux, où il y a une plage, l’océan et rien d’autre.
Puisque votre nom de groupe est Tokio Hotel, avez-vous déjà vécu des expériences bizarres d’hôtellerie?
B: Oui, nous sommes allés dans trop d’hôtels durant nos voyages et nous avons quelques favoris, comme celui à Singapore, à vrai dire. Et nous avons eu quelques mauvaises expériences, comme cet hôtel en Afrique du Sud, où nous avons tourné notre vidéo, il se disait être un hôtel, mais ce n’en était pas vraiment un. C’était plutôt un petit bungalow qui pouvait contenir tout le monde et qui avait un camping inclu! It faisait p*tainement froid dans la chambre et il n’y avait pas de chaleur! Rien à manger, pas d’Internet, ni d’eau! C’était vraiment une expérience pour nous.
Qu’écoutez-vous sur vos iPod?
B: Un mélange entre Aerosmith et des trucs pop, je n’ai pas de groupe fétiche, mais la plupart du temps j’écoute ce groupe qui se nomme Tokio Hotel.
Georg: J’aime vraiment le nouvel album de 30 Seconds To Mars. Je l’écoute tout le temps.
Gustav: J’écoute du Devilish.
